Right now, as you read this, more than 2 million human beings are living in cages in America. That’s about the same as the entire population of Slovenia . . . or Macedonia . . . or any number of countries.12 In fact, America has more human beings locked up in prisons than any other country in the world. Here’s another way to look at it: about one out of every 100 adults in the United States is in prison!13 More than 7 million Americans are either behind bars, on probation, or on parole.14 We have 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of the world’s prison population. Any which way you slice it . . . it’s shocking! As a country, we are on a punishment binge, and when you consider that most addictive behavior is progressive, this trend is almost guaranteed to grow. So, it’s high time we ponder the question: Why are we, as Americans, so obsessed with putting people behind bars?
